Common Processing Methods of Thread in CNC Lathe Machining

Today we explain the common thread processing methods in CNC lathing, they are divided into four common methods: CNC lathing, CNC milling, tapping, and thread whirlwind milling.

CNC Lathe

On the CNC lathe, there are 4 standard threads for turning metric system, inch system, modulus and diameter control. No matter which thread is turned, strict activity relationship must be maintained between the lathe spindle and tools. That is to say, every time the spindle rotates (i.e., the workpiece rotates), the tool must move an average of one lead interval. If the thread is processed on a CNC lathe, it can be summarized with drawings. The following subdivisions can be divided into the straight cutting method of radial cutter, the control turning method of rotating cutter, and the oblique cutting method of side cutter.

1. Straight forward method: Applicable to small pitch, guide less than 3mm, select G32 or G92.

2. Oblique advance method: It is not easy to cut the tool, and it is preferred to select G76 command if there is no undercut.

3. Control turning method: Large tooth profile, large pitch, guide more than 5mm, macro program.

 

CNC Milling

Namely, thread milling, milling with disc milling or comb milling cutter on the thread milling machine. Disk milling cutter is mainly used for milling trapezoidal external threads on workpieces such as screw and worm. Comb type milling cutter is used for milling the interior, so common thread and tapered thread are used. Multi edge milling cutter is used for milling. The length of its working part is longer than the length of the processing thread. The workpiece can be processed by rotating 1.25~1.5, with high production rate. The pitch accuracy of thread milling can generally reach grade 8~9, and the surface roughness is R5-0.63 μ m. This method is applicable to thread manufacturing with normal accuracy and rough machining before grinding. The spiral slope milling of rotary tools generates threads. Although it is not used as frequently as the CNC lathe, it is also highly efficient when used in a unique scene.

 

Tapping

Tapping is to use a certain torque to rotate the awl to the pre drilled bottom hole of the workpiece to process the internal thread. But threading is to use die to cut external thread on bar (or pipe) workpiece. The machining accuracy of tapping or threading depends on the accuracy of taper or die. Although there are many ways to process internal and external threads, small diameter internal threads can only be processed by tap. Tapping and threading can be manually operated, or lathe, drilling machine, tapping machine and threading machine can be used.

 

Cyclone Milling

CNC cyclone milling machine has single head multi head, worm, screw, nut and other thread products, the processing efficiency has been improved by 10-30 times, the processing accuracy has been improved by two poles, and the brightness has reached 0 times, 8 um. Whirlwind milling and numerical milling have no difference in processing technology. The main reason is that the blade is installed inside the cutting disc, rotating cylindrical parts, and cutting threads at one time. It is highly efficient!
