What is car wheel hub and what is it made of? In this article, we’ll also talk about the manufacturing of automobile hubs.

Materials of Car Wheel Hub

The wheel hub, is the inner shape of the tire, is used to support the barrel body of the tire, and the center is assembled on the wheel hub shaft Common automobile wheels are steel wheels and aluminum alloy wheels. Aluminum wheel hub is also called aluminum ring or aluminum wheel roller. As its name implies, it is made of aluminum alloy with low density. The aluminum alloy materials used for manufacturing aluminum wheels include A356, 6061, etc. Among them, A356 is widely used for casting aluminum wheels. A356 aluminum alloy is characterized by small proportion and good corrosion resistance. It is mainly composed of aluminum, silicon, magnesium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, titanium and other metal elements. Aluminum accounts for about 92%.

Manufacturing Technology of Automobile Hub

The manufacturing process of vehicle hub generally includes forging, casting and spinning.

1) Forging: This forging process can also include gravity casting and low-pressure casting. The process of gravity forging is very simple. After the liquid alloy is poured into the mold, it is naturally formed by gravity, and the cost is quite low; Low pressure casting relies on the low-pressure liquid alloy compression mold. The hub produced by this way has relatively high metal density, relatively high strength, more complex modeling and higher safety factor. It is the key mode of aluminum alloy wheel manufacturing, with relatively high yield and automation;

2) Casting: with the help of high pressure, a piece of heated alloy is first pressed into the rough embryo of the wheel hub, and secondary production processing is carried out through the production line. Of course, the modeling is quite simple, and the surface of the wheel hub is mostly simple and rough lines.

3) Spinning process: this process has the necessary requirements for pressure and temperature. With the help of rotary motion and extrusion, the structure at the local position of the wheel hub rim is extended; The hub produced in this way can greatly reduce the weight of the hub while ensuring that the strength of the hub meets the requirements.

Hub Manufacturing Process Difference

1. The difference of wheel hub manufacturing process can be summarized simply as follows: the wheels of ordinary cars are cast, while those of high-end cars are forged; Casting also includes three categories, with the grades from low to high: gravity casting, low pressure casting and spinning casting.

2. Gravity casting is to pour liquid metal into the wheel hub mold to cool and shape it. Low pressure casting is a small upgrade of gravity casting. At the beginning, it is basically the same. Pour liquid metal into the mold, but the low pressure casting process will exert a constant pressure on it. In this way, the molecular density of metal will be higher and the strength of wheel hub will be higher.

3. Spinning casting is also an upgraded version of low pressure casting, which is simply understood as a secondary production processing of the cast wheel hub, heating and rotary stamping at the same time. The manufacturing process of forged wheel hub is to heat the aluminum block, press it into blank with forging press after reaching the necessary temperature, and then spin the blank into shape.

4. Compared with the forged hub, the forged hub has the following advantages: higher strength. Most are based on aluminum and are lighter. Higher reliability and more precise process.
