Angle is one of the major shapes of structural steel, with a unique shape, mechanical properties, and specific ways to measure it. Today, we’ll break down the steel angle types, properties (strength), grades, measurement, and cutting, as well as the angle iron size chart in mm and inches (PDF provided).
What Is Steel Angle?
Steel angle, also known as angle iron or steel angle bar, is a type of structural steel shape that is commonly used in construction and manufacturing. Steel angles have an L-shaped cross-section, which consists of two legs that meet at a 90-degree angle. These legs can be of equal length (equal angles) or of different lengths (unequal angles). They are typically made from hot-rolled carbon steel or high-strength low-alloy steel, providing durability and strength for various applications.

What Is Mild Steel Angle?
A mild steel angle, commonly referred to as MS angle, is a type of structural steel product characterized by its L-shaped cross-section. Made from mild steel, these angles are known for their high strength, corrosion resistance, and cost-effectiveness. Mild steel angles are widely used in the construction, machinery and equipment, automobile, furniture, and decor industries.
Properties of Steel Angle
- Weight per Foot: The weight of steel angles varies based on their dimensions. For example, an L8x8x1/8 angle weighs approximately 26.4 lbs per foot, while an L8x8x1 angle weighs about 51 lbs per foot.
- Cross-Section Area: The cross-sectional area is crucial for determining the load-bearing capacity. For instance, an L8x8x1 angle has a cross-sectional area of 15 in².
- Moment of Inertia: This property indicates how resistant the angle is to bending. For example, the moment of inertia for an L8x8x1 angle is 89 in⁴.
- Yield Strength: Steel angles typically have a yield strength of around 36,000 psi for A36 steel.
- Tensile Strength: The tensile strength of mild steel angles can range from 58,000 to 80,000 psi, depending on the specific grade of steel used.
How strong is the steel angle? Structural or steel angle has a minimum yield strength of 36 ksi and a minimum tensile strength of 25 ksi. Compared to square tubes, angle iron has a higher strength. Steel angle is one of the strongest structural support elements.
Different Types of Steel Angle
1. Equal Angle
Equal angles have legs of the same length, forming a symmetrical L-shape. This uniformity makes them ideal for a wide range of applications, including bracing systems and support beams.
2. Unequal Angle
Unequal angles feature legs of different lengths, providing flexibility for applications where an asymmetrical profile is needed. They are commonly used in trusses and floor framing, allowing for tailored solutions based on load-bearing requirements.
3. Rolled Steel Angle
Rolled steel angles are produced by passing heated steel billets through rollers to achieve the desired angle profile. This method ensures precise dimensions and uniform mechanical properties, they are suitable for structural and fabrication applications.
4. Cold-Formed Steel Angle
Cold-formed steel angles are created by bending or folding sheet metal at room temperature. This process allows for intricate geometries and tight tolerances, cold formed metal angle is usually used in partitions and shelving systems.
5. Galvanized Steel Angle
Galvanized steel angles are coated with a protective layer of zinc, enhancing their corrosion resistance. They are particularly suitable for outdoor and marine environments, where exposure to moisture and harsh weather conditions is common.
6. Stainless Steel Angle
Stainless steel angles are made from a corrosion-resistant alloy, providing exceptional durability and aesthetic appeal. They are often used in architectural designs and industrial applications, especially in environments prone to corrosion.
Grades of Steel Angles
Steel angles are categorized based on their material properties and chemical composition, which determine their suitability for various applications.
Mild Steel Angles
- A36: This is one of the most common grades used for structural steel angles. It has good weldability and is suitable for a variety of construction applications.
- S235JR: A European standard grade that offers good tensile strength and is often used in construction and engineering.
- Q235: A Chinese standard grade similar to A36, widely used in construction and manufacturing.
- SS400: A Japanese standard grade is known for its good weldability and versatility in structural applications.
- SS490: Another Japanese grade that offers higher strength compared to SS400, suitable for more demanding applications.
- ST37: A low carbon steel grade that is often used in structural applications due to its good weldability and machinability.
High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) Steel Angles
- A572: This grade is stronger than A36 and is often used in applications requiring higher strength-to-weight ratios.
- A588: Known for its weathering properties, this grade is ideal for structures exposed to harsh environments, as it develops a protective rust layer.
How to Measure Steel Angles?
The measurement of steel angles involves three dimensions, the length of each leg and the leg thickness. The rounded inside angle is called fillet, the fillet radius size is not always provided but needs to be considered if the angle will be used to cover a 90-degree angle. If the fillet radius is required to be 90 degrees, the standard structural angle will not work in this application.
Key Measurements
- Leg Length: Measure the length of each leg of the angle. For equal angles, both legs will be the same length, while for unequal angles, the legs will differ.
- Thickness: Measure the thickness of the legs. This is crucial for understanding the strength and load-bearing capacity of the angle.
Measurement Process
- Tools Needed: Use a tape measure or caliper for precise measurements.
- Positioning: Ensure the angle is placed on a flat surface for accurate measurement.
- Recording Dimensions: Write down the measurements in the format of “Leg Length x Leg Length x Thickness” (e.g., 2” x 2” x 1/8” for an equal angle) or “Leg Length x Leg Length x Thickness” for unequal angles (e.g., 3” x 2” x 3/16”).
Best Way to Cut Steel Angle
Cutting steel angles can be done effectively using various tools, depending on the precision required and the volume of cuts needed.
1. Chop Saw
A chop saw is one of the best tools for making multiple precise cuts. By using a diamond or abrasive blade, you can achieve clean and accurate cuts quickly, this is recommended for projects requiring several pieces of angle iron.
2. Angle Grinder
For smaller jobs, an angle grinder equipped with a cutoff wheel is a reliable option. It allows for flexibility in cutting and can handle various angles and shapes, making it suitable for trimming and notching.
3. Torch Cutting
If you need to make more complex cuts or shapes, a cutting torch can be very effective. Torch cutting is particularly useful for creating bolt holes or intricate designs in thicker steel angles.
4. Miter Saw
A miter saw can also be used for cutting steel angles, especially when making angled cuts. However, it requires careful handling and marking to ensure accuracy.
5. Bandsaw
A portable bandsaw is another excellent choice for cutting steel angles, especially for thinner materials. It provides a clean cut and is easier to maneuver than larger saws.
6. Hand Tools
For lighter gauge steel angles, hand tools like a hacksaw or aviation snips can be used, although they may require more effort and time compared to power tools.
